SLOUGH, September 3, 2007 – DataDirect Technologies has announced that the Port of Dover, Europe’s leading ro-ro port, has used its XML Converters to prepare for the alignment of customs clearance messaging formats. The XML Converters replace an internally developed EDI translator which was proving impossible to develop to meet new EDIFACT standards as part of the EU’s preparations for SAD Harmonisation. Lying at the heart of UK and Continental Europe’s cross-Channel transport network, the Port of Dover uses an internally developed customs clearing system called ClearWay to allow freight customers handling imports and exports to clear at Dover. The system interfaces to CHIEF, HM Revenue & Customs’ computer, for receipt and submission of messages and also sends print notifications to customers. Realising that the new message formats being sent out by HMRC would push what was already an unreliable EDI assembler/disassembler to breaking point, the Port of Dover began to look for a new translator to turn the EDI messages into the XML format it needed internally. Together with the XML Converters, Dover uses DataDirect’s Stylus Studio to create templates for the messages, saving hours of development time. Andy Allen, senior analyst programmer at Dover, said: “Once we’ve got the XML messages, it’s great, we can use our existing tools within our .NET framework and off we go.” He added: “We got fantastic help and support from DataDirect. That was one of the things that really swung it for us. They went out of their way to offer assistance and, quite frankly, many of the other suppliers that we looked at didn’t.” Terence Cooke, vice president of international sales for DataDirect said: “We are delighted that DataDirect’s XML Converters and Stylus Studio could provide the high performance, scalable .NET component and rapid development environment to help the Port of Dover meet the new EU messaging formats.” Diagram of the Port of Dover’s EDI architecture
