Document Sciences Selects DataDirect Technologies’ XML Converters and XQuery Engine for High-Volume XML Data Conversion, Processing and Integration

Company Sees Improved Performance, Reduced Development Efforts and Faster Delivery of Customer Communications Management Solutions

BEDFORD, Mass. – Oct. 30, 2007– DataDirect Technologies, the unparalleled leader in data connectivity and mainframe integration and an operating company of Progress Software Corporation (Nasdaq: PRGS), today announced that Document Sciences Corporation, a market-leading global provider of customer communications management solutions, has embedded DataDirect XML Converters™ products and DataDirect XQuery® processing engine into its next-generation xPression® 3 software suite.

Document Sciences' flagship product, xPression 3, is an award-winning dynamic content publishing platform that enables organizations to automate the creation and delivery of well-designed, highly personalized customer communications – from customized marketing collaterals, contracts, and policies to high-volume relationship statements and correspondence. Based on open standards and platforms such as J2EE™, XML, Web Services, JMS and .NET, xPression 3 provides a comprehensive suite of components for document design, assembly, composition, output processing and delivery. More than 600 organizations worldwide use Document Sciences’ technologies to optimize the customer experience, reduce costs and increase competitiveness.

At the core of xPression 3’s content publishing infrastructure is the ability to store business documents that can then be consumed in different formats and manipulated using business rules executed by the xAssemble rule engine. The xPRS server, comprised of publishing and infrastructure components, uses XML for data input and export processes. Prior to its relationship with DataDirect Technologies, Document Sciences supported data input from different flat file formats by developing and maintaining in-house converters. This proved to be an expensive and time consuming strategy.

"We needed a high-performance data mapping tool to help our customers shape XML, one that could be easily embedded into our stack and offered an XML transformation engine for converting one XML format to another," said Doug Winter, Chief Operating Officer for Document Sciences. "DataDirect Technologies answered the call on all fronts. Its comprehensive XML product offering, coupled with a solid reputation for outstanding customer service and support, made them an ideal technology partner."

The DataDirect XML Converters products are high-performance JavaTM and .NET components that can be easily embedded into any application to provide bi-directional, programmatic access to virtually any non-XML file including EDI, flat files and other legacy formats. To enable and manage proprietary extensions to standard file formats, custom XML conversions can be created using the Stylus Studio® product, DataDirect Technologies’ award-winning XML integrated development environment.

The DataDirect XQuery engine is an XQuery processor that enables software developers to access and query XML, relational data, SOAP messages, EDI messages, legacy data, or a combination of data sources. In the case of Document Sciences, access to EDI and legacy data from DataDirect XQuery is granted by the XML Converters. Using DataDirect XQuery and XML Converters, Document Sciences can achieve data transparency within the xPression 3 software suite because all data sources are available through a single standards-based query language. This greatly reduces code complexity, simplifies code maintenance and improves performance and scalability. Programmers at Document Sciences found DataDirect XQuery so easy to work with and the results so significant, they’ve begun to offload more and more XML-related tasks to the DataDirect XQuery engine.

"The combination of DataDirect Technologies’ XML Converters working alongside DataDirect XQuery continues to offer a powerful tool to meet the diverse XML requirements of an organization," said Dr. Carlo Innocenti, XML program manager at DataDirect Technologies. "Using the DataDirect XML Converters products and DataDirect XQuery engine, Document Sciences is able to pass a high-quality, modern integration infrastructure to its customers – one that can support data integration among various partners and easily handle the creation of complex, data intensive, high-volume documents."
